3 Gems of Caribbean - Antigua, Barbados & Jamaica

Rocked by music, rolled by change, lapped by turquoise water, blown by hurricanes – the Caribbean is not a place anyone could call static. It’s a lively and intoxicating profusion of people and places spread over 7000 islands (fewer than 10% are inhabited). But, for all they share, there’s also much that makes them different. Forming a huge swath around the Caribbean Sea, the namesake islands contradict in ways big and small. Can there be a greater contrast than between socialist Cuba and its neighbor, the bank-packed Cayman Islands? Or between booming British-oriented St Kitts and its sleepy, Dutch-affiliated neighbor Sint Eustatius, just across a narrow channel? With amazing culture, beaches, activities and weather – not to mention the rum – the Caribbean is a joyous riot of islands offering the ultimate escape.  They've long been known as a resort vacation destination for honeymooners and retirees, but a small movement toward eco-tourism and backpacking has started to open up the Caribbean to more independent travel.

Antigua
It is a fact that an Antigua holiday is pleasantly slow-paced, and the nightlife is refreshingly low-key. If you are looking for excitement during the evenings, some of the holiday resorts do have casinos that can get rather lively after dark. However, it is our experience that most of the discerning individuals who choose to holiday in Antigua spend most of their time after hours just chilling out at one of the island’s many great bars or restaurants. From snorkeling with stingrays and deep sea fishing, windsurfing and boat charter, a round of golf and rainforest adventures, kayaking and eco adventures, Antigua can provide fun-filled days. There are also rainforest canopy adventures, scenic historical tours, scuba-diving, hiking, kite surfing and sailing.

Barbados
A home away from home, Barbados is a Caribbean paradise proud of its British heritage, and Barbados hotels offer warm Bajan hospitality with a quaint colonial flavor. Barbados holidays can involve taking afternoon tea, hiking the scenic hills of 'Scotland' and standing beneath Lord Nelson's gaze at his statue in Bridgetown. But don't forget to indulge in the Bajan way of life; the hotels in Barbados are laid-back, beachside retreats where a hard day’s work is topping up your tan and sipping on a rum cocktail. World class water sports including surfing at Soup Bowl on the east coast and various breaks along the west when the swell is up. The south coast has great surf and a spot on the world windsurfing tour at Silver Sands. Travel inland to various plantation houses which put on meals and exhibitions. Visit the animal flower cave or Barbados wildlife reserve.

Jamaica
The home of reggae, rum and Rastas, Jamaica is a tropical paradise of pristine beaches, crashing waterfalls and lush landscapes, and Jamaica hotels are the perfect base for your island getaway. Kick back with a rum cocktail with the Blue Mountains as your backdrop, or take your time to discover the island's colonial past; Jamaica holidays promise both laid-back lounging and an action-packed break. The beaches are a lure for many, especially Negril with its 7-mile white sand beach, lively Ocho Rios with its collection of beaches for sun-worshippers, and Montego Bay with its calm waters - great for families and water sports. The spirit of the legendary Bob Marley and reggae music has been ever-present in Jamaica, renowned for its strong musical culture, and Jamaican cuisine is a melting pot of flavors that reflect the different cultures that have influenced the island over the years.
